Feminist Witches & Bitches?

Feminism has a history of being associated with witches and witchcraft.

In the historic witch trials it was mostly women who were persecuted, and commonly those who were single, independent, capable and skilled (particularly in midwifery).

‘Witch’ has often been used as an insult to feminists. In the modern day, negative stereotypes have been questioned and eschewed. There are fictional witches (such as Wicked’s Elphaba Thropp, Disney’s new portrayal of Maleficent, and the female magicfolk of Harry Potter) who are depicted as strong and admirable. They are seen as role models by many.

Along with a reversal of the perception of witches in recent years, there has been a reclaiming of insults such as ‘bossy’ and ‘bitch(y)’. These have typically been thrown at women whenever they are confident, competent, take charge, or are leaders, and are now used by some women to describe themselves in order to remove the negative connotations.

As well as making a pun out of the popular hashtag, this t-shirt was designed (as always) from a feminist perspective, based on these two empowering reforms, where women having powers is now seen as positive.

The t-shirt is available in grey marl and white here!
